Clifford Cemetery, Center TownshipIndex of Clifford Cemetery burials . . . .
The Clifford Cemetery, also referred to as the Old Catholic Cemetery and the Old
St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery, is obliterated and neither marked nor visible. The cemetery was located at the intersection of 150 West and 350 North,
along the west side of 150 West [just west of the center of Section 15]. The
cemetery was named in honor of Patrick T. Clifford on whose farm it was located.
The first mass of what would become the St. Paul congregation of Valparaiso also
took place on the Clifford farm with Father Strenka reportedly officiating the
Mass.
According to information compiled about this cemetery by the Northwest Indiana
Genealogical Society:
"Patrick Clifford arrived in Center
Township in 1854 from
Ireland and settled 2 1/2 miles
northwest of Valparaiso - 1876
map shows cemetery on the Clifford
farm.
In 1936 some of the stones were moved
to St. Paul Cemetery
[Valparaiso] and placed on family
plots."
Burials ceased to occur at the Clifford Cemetery when the new St. Paul Cemetery
began accepting burials as early as January 27, 1875, with the burial of
Catharine D. Clifford. Burial listings provided below include some burials now
located in the new St. Paul's Cemetery that are assumed to have been originally
located in the Clifford Cemetery.
Location of the Clifford Cemetery as it appeared in
Hardesty's 1876 plat map for Center Township.
At some point in time, it is believed that the Clifford family wished to remove
all burials on their land to the St. Paul Cemetery south of Valparaiso [located
on Sturdy Road at the intersection with Comeford Road and south of Graceland
Cemetery and Maplewood Cemetery]. One rumor is that only individuals buried in
Clifford Cemetery whose families paid for disinterment and reburial in the St.
Paul Cemetery were removed from the Clifford property; thus, it is highly likely
that burials still exist on the Clifford Cemetery site. It has also been claimed
that as late as the early 1980s that cemetery tombstones were still located on
the Clifford Cemetery site, then owned by John Froberg. John Froberg purchased
the property from John B. Clifford in 1940. One rumor is that Froberg gathered
any remaining tombstones and buried them on his property.
This enumeration of burials in Clifford Cemetery is based on cross referencing information from published
obituaries, an enumeration of burials from St. Paul Catholic Church in
Valparaiso, and information contained on the Find A Grave website for St. Paul
Cemetery. An assumption was made that individuals with a death date occurring after
January 27, 1875, were interred in the new St. Paul Cemetery south of Valparaiso. It is very likely that this enumeration excludes many other
individuals that were interred in the Clifford Cemetery.
It is known that as late as May 1884, the the Old Catholic Cemetery on the
Clifford property was still being maintained to come degree given the following
news item that appeared in the May 15, 1884, issue of the Porter County
Vidette.

CRONICAN [1]
Birth:
Death: Before 1875
Notes: An obituary published in the January 30, 1879, issue of the Porter County
Vidette states that: "His [William Cronican's] family is widely scattered; the
ashes of one reposing beyond the sea, another in New York, and the remaining two
lie in the old St. Paul's cemetery." Investigation of the burial records for the
"new" St. Paul Cemetery located south of Valparaiso do not show indicate any
Cronican burials prior to 1879, which suggests that the two Cronican burials
mentioned in William's Cronican's obituary are still located on the Clifford

CRONICAN, William
Birth: 1812
Death: January 20, 1879
Notes: Information published by the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society
states that William Cronican "was buried at Old Catholic Cemetery, but will be
buried at the new Catholic Cemetery." No source is provided for the Northwest
Indiana Genealogical Society's statement. However, an obituary published for
William Cronacan [sic] in the Porter County Vidette on January 23, 1879,
states in part that "After the services were over one of the largest
processions, composed of Catholics and non-Catholics, that ever passed through
the streets of Valparaiso, accompanied the highly respected remains of Mr.
Cronacan to St. Paul's new cemetery, where they were consigned to an earthly
tomb...." Hence, the published obituary suggests that William Cronican was never
interred in the Clifford Cemetery as suggested by information published by the
Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society.
