Transcribed biography of Maggie Walters

Maggie Walters (25 November 1876 - 4 December 1939). Maggie was the daughter of John Wesley Walters (1831-1903) and Maria C. Mock (1834-1888); see John's biography on this Porter County GenWeb site. Maggie married Clark V. Berdine (1876 - 18 Feb. 1941) on 27 January 1904. The dates for Clark given in his death notice and on the online site for Hebron Cemetery are incorrect. She spent her entire life in Boone Grove, Porter County, Indiana. Family visits with the family of Sherman and Mytha were common. In February 1934, Maggie visited her son Vernon who had undergone surgery in Chicago. In November 1934, she was treated in Hammond for an unspecified illness. In November of 1939, Mr. and Mrs. Blake Berdine moved into their parents home to care for her ailing mother. Maggie died in Valparaiso on 4 December 1939 and a memorial service was held at the Methodist Church in Hebron. She was buried in Hebron Cemetery. Her husband Clark died at age 65 at 9:45 on the morning of 15 February 1941 at his home in Boone Township, Porter County. Clark died in the home which, except of three years, he had lived for his entire life. Clark and Maggie had three children. Lois L. Berdine (11 September 1905 - 4 January 1992) was the oldest and was still living at home at the time of her mothers death. When her father's died in 1941 Lois was teaching at Lowell High School. Vernon Berdine (11 September 1909 - March 1969) was the next child. In 1927, the county superintendant of schools awarded Vernon one of two scholarships to attend Indiana University. On 7 September 1927, a farewell party was held for Vernon who was leaving to attend Indiana University. Vernon attended from September 1927 to May 1930, but left without taking a degree. He married Elanor Skelton. He was living in Hammond in 1939. At the time of his father's death Vernon was living in Calumet City, Indiana. He died in Illinois. Blake W. Berdine (11 June 1917 -13 January 2002) was the youngest son of Clark and Maggie. Blake was living in Boone Township at the time his mother died. On 15 August 1952, a notice appeared in the Valparaiso Vidette that Blake Berdine was selling his household goods because he was moving. Blake died in Collier County, Florida.
