Transcribed biography of Charles D. Walters
Charles D. Walters (November 1861 - 1939) is sometimes shown as, "Charley Walters." Charles was the son of John Wesley Walters (1831-1903) and Maria C. Mock (1834-1888); see John's biography on this Porter County GenWeb site. He was eight years old in the 1870 Dallas County, Missouri, Federal Census. Charles is one of two members of the family I have found in the 1880 census. He is working as a laborer on the farm of his father's sister Lucinda Fuller and her husband Amassa in Porter Township of Porter County. On 15 December 1886, in Porter County, Indiana, Charles married Olive B. Gossett (February 1867 - 21 May 1932). They spent the remainder of their lives in Porter County. In 1900 and 1910 he was farming in Porter County and in 1920 he was a janitor in the public schools. In 1930 he was working in an elevator in Porter Township of Porter County. On 20 October 1931 it was reported that Olive was quite ill. Olive died at her house in Boone Grove on 21 May 1931 after a year's illness. She was buried in Cornell Cemetery. Charles D. Walters died in 1939 and was buried in Cornell Cemetery, Porter County.
I believe Charles and Olive had only one child, a son Claude Walters (21 January 1892 - before 1971) who settled in North Manchester, Indiana. Claude was married by between 1917 and 1920. His wife was Edith Dunn (1895 -7 Feb. 1971). She was the daughter of Ezra Albert Dunn and Valaria Dunn. For a time she worked as a teacher. In the teens Claude was employed as a telegraph operator for the Erie Railroad. In 1932, Claude and his wife were living in Boone Grove. Olive's obituary reports that Alatha Wilson was her daughter; she was, in fact, Olive's sister. No daughter is reported for Charles and Olive in any Federal census.
