HERSHEL FURNESS
HERSCHEL FURNESS -- born January 1896, son of Albert and Jane (Malone) Furness. Married Lena Vetterley, now deceased. They were parents of ten children -- Lester, Donald, Gordon, Loren, Lois Johnson, Audrey Buss, Rosemary Braginton, Dorothy Dunn, Betty Ambrose, and Patricia Smith. He is a lifelong resident of Pine Township, his family coming to Porter County from Maine in the 1850's. He comes from a seafaring family, several of his ancestors were actively engaged in the American Revolution, one having donated a ship to the cause. He traces his family back to the 1600's in New England. He is now a retired farmer. Active in the Farm Bureau for many years, he now holds a life-time membership in that organization. Prior to 1967 he served as a member of the Pine Township Advisory Board for many years.
