Transcribed biography of Hallard A. Flynn

HALLARD A. FLYNN is a native of Indiana, as was his father before him. James E. Flynn was born in Rush county, Indiana, on August 30, 1846, and is still a resident of the state, making his home in Jasper county. He was married to Sarah P. Colby, and they were the parents of seven children. The mother died in 1908 and at present the surviving members of the family of nine are four: the father, two daughters, and one son, the subject of this sketch. Both of the daughters are married, Harriett to H. V. Weaver, of Lowell, Indiana, and Lona to H. C. Nichols, of Chesterton. Hallard Flynn was born in the year of the centennial of the Declaration of Independence, on July 27, in Shelby county. This was his home for four years and then the family moved to Jasper county. James Flynn was a miller by trade and he found a better opening in Jasper county for his business. Hallard was educated in the schools of Rensselaer, graduating from the high school in 1895. He then spent three years as a clerk in the Forsythe department store, and upon leaving that establishment he went to Chicago and entered the employ of one of the large wholesale houses in that city, that of J. V. Farwell & Company, dealers in wholesale dry goods. Mr. Flynn remained with this firm for four years and then went on the road for a St. Louis house. He spent a year representing Ferguson & McKinney and then came to Chesterton and went into business for himself. His desire to leave the road was promoted by his marriage just at this time. While in Chicago he had become acquainted with Miss Eva Lundberg, of Chesterton, who was at Northwestern University, studying music. Upon leaving the Chesterton school Miss Lundberg had decided to specialize in that art, and so became a student at Evanston. Miss Lundberg and Mr. Flynn were married in Chesterton on June 24, 1903, and have since resided in this city. Mrs. Flynn is the daughter of John B. and Phoebe A. Lundberg, both of whom are well known in Chesterton. Besides being unusually gifted in music, Mrs. Flynn is a great reader in various lines and a woman of broad general culture. Two children have blessed their union, a son, John E. Flynn, now four years of age, and a daughter, Evelyn T., who is three years the older.

Mr. Flynn is a Republican, and he takes the deepest interest in public affairs. At present he is the president of the town board of Chesterton, and he is known as one of the most public-spirited of its citizens, being practically interested in all of the agencies that tend to the upbuilding of the community. He is an untiring worker in the Methodist church, of which both he and Mrs. Flynn are members, Mr. Flynn being one of the official board of that denomination.

The building in which Mr. Flynn carries on his business is owned by the J. B. Lundberg Company. He has an extensive stock of furniture, besides his equipment for the undertaking business. In both Indiana arid Illinois he is a licensed embalmer, and is a post-graduate of the Barnes School of Embalming. Another matter in which he is interested in a financial way is the Bank of Chesterton, in which he is a stockholder.

Fraternally Mr. Flynn is a Mason and a Knight of Pythias. In both orders he has held a prominent place, being a past master in the Masonic fraternity and the past chancellor of the Knights of Pythias, No. 442, at Chesterton, Indiana.
