JOHN P. CRUMPACKER - The name Crumpacker, due to service of a very high order dedicated by various members of the family, has become well-known throughout this region of the state, in fact throughout the state at large. In the judiciary circles, in the halls of Congress, and in the higher walks of civic and professional life, the Crumpacker family have gained distinction. John P. Crumpacker, the immediate subject of our sketch, was born in Valparaiso, Indiana, on October 26, 1895, the son of Grant and Lottie (Wade) Crumpacker, the former a native of Porter County and the latter of Martin, Tennessee. Grant Crumpacker is well-known in legal circles in this community, having practiced law in this county for a number of years and having been the successful aspirant for the office of the Porter County Circuit Court judge in the election of 1926. To Grant and Lottie Crumpacker were born the following children: John P.; Wade K, of Battle Creek, Michigan; Mary Arden; and Ruth Annette, now a student of Valparaiso University.
John P. Crumpacker attended the public schools of Valparaiso, and also the University of Valparaiso, where he received the degree of A. B. in 1920 and in 1923 graduated from Indiana University with the degree of LL. B. He was admitted to the practice of law in Porter County in the same year, and also in the Supreme and Appellate and Federal courts.
He was married to Rachel, the daughter of Carlton and Addie Thatcher of Valparaiso, who for many years had been highly esteemed citizens of this community. To this marriage was born one daughter, Carol Arden, on January 4, 1926. Mr. Crumpacker is assistant county prosecutor of Porter County. He also served as chairman of the First Voters League of Porter County and secretary of the City Republican Central Committee. He is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association, Porter County Bar Association and the Elks.
