MYRICK CRAMPTON
Myrick Brooks Crampton (Mike) son of Wade and Barbara Crampton, was born and raised in Steuben County, Indiana and graduated from Pleasant Lake, High School, Pleasant Lake, Indiana. He attended the Indiana State Police School at Indiana University in 1937, was appointed and assigned to Dunes Park Post, Chesterton, Indiana September 1, 1937.
In 1938, he married Dorothy Eschenbach, daughter of Raymond and Martha Echenbach who owned and operated Eschenbach's Restaurant in Chesterton.
Mike stayed in Porter County and during his 28 years as a State Policeman, he saw many changes in this area. He had extensive training in all phases of police work and he retired from the state police in 1965. After working in plant protection at Midwest steel for a year, he decided to run for, and was elected Sheriff of Porter County.
The old jail was in sad condition and the county decided it was worth fixing, so that was done. Also during his first term, the merit system was started assuring the deputies of continuing service and a pension plan. The department was up-dated and new deputies were added and trained.
Mike ran unopposed for the second term and it was during this time that the new Porter County Jail was built. Much research was done before the final plans were consummated. The new jail was finished and occupied January of 1973 and is the finest of its kind in Indiana.
Mike has served his community as past president of the Chesterton Lion's Club of Chesterton and Past District Deputy Governor of District 25-A. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shrine (Orak Temple), Moose, Elks and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was the organizer and first president of the State Park Little League and is a counsellor for the Boy Scouts.
The Cramptons have three children, Kay Goldsworthy (John) who lives in Dayton, Ohio and has two children, William 13 and Katherine 11, Raymond Wade and wife Diane who live in Warren, New Jersey and have three boys, Myrick 13, Raymond John 3 and Eric Scott one month, Barbara is the youngest, a junior at Valparaiso University, the student director of the Crusaderettes and a featured twirler with the band.
Dorothy has been active in her community also. She was the first president of Beta Gamma Upsilon Sorority, Alpha Rho Chapter of Chesterton, and a past national President of the sorority. She is a past president of the Chesterton Woman's Club, Porter County Federation of Clubs and Past District President of 10th District, Indiana Federation of Clubs. She has been campaign director and president of the Porter County March of Dimes for the past 25 years.
Currently she is President of the Valparaiso Woman's Club and the Porter County Cancer Society, member of the Board of Directors of the Westchester branch of the YMCA and a member of the Porter County Bi-Centennial committee.
