John Baum, born in Richlaud County, Ohio, August 12, 1823, removed with his parents to Porter Co., Ind., in 1835, and came to Oregon when 24 years of age. He located at Salem, but the gold discovery or 1848 drew him to Cal. In 1850 he drifted back to Oregon from the Shasta mines, and in July 1851 married Phoebe S. Tieters, who died in July 1873, leaving 8 living children, 3 of whom were sons, namely, James T., John N., and Edgar C. Sonoma Co. Hist., 631.
