Transcribed biography of Harry S. Albe
HARRY S. ALBE - Was born May 28, 1899, in Valparaiso, Indiana, the son of Emanuel and Mabel (Riddle) Albe, both of whom were natives of Porter County. The paternal grandparents, Max and Amalia Albe, were born in Germany and in 1855 came to America; they remained three years in New York and then settled in Valparaiso, where Max Albe established a fur business at what is now 76 South Washington Street, and continued in this business until his death, which occurred in 1898. The maternal grandparents were John C. and Lutitia (Freeman) Riddle of Canada, who settled in Porter County at an early date and were there engaged in farming. Emanuel Albe, father of our subject, was one of seven children born to his parents; the others were Louis, Adolph, Samuel, Rose, Julius, and Harry. Harry S. Albe was the eldest of two children born to his parents, the other being John, who is engaged in association with his mother in the operation of the Albe Hotel. Our subject attended Valparaiso University, but before he had completed his collegiate education he enlisted in the Aviation Corps for World war service; he was sent to Mineola, Long Island, where he was attached to the Two Hundred Fifty-third Aerial Squadron, and was among those who were ordered abroad. The armistice intervened, however, and he was later sent to Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, Ohio, where he was honorably discharged February 1, 1919. Returning to Valparaiso, he became associated with his father in the hotel business until 1923. In July of that year he established a general insurance business in Valparaiso, representing a number of welil known lines, including the Aetna Life Insurance Company. He enjoys a general patronage throughout the county, and particularly in Valparaiso. Inasmuch as he handles insurance exclusively, the slogan of "Nothing But Insurance" has been adopted in his office. Mr. Albe was married to Thelma, daughter of Edward M. and Alma (Baum) Passow of Valparaiso. A son, Harry James Albe, was born to Harry S. and Thelma Albe on February 17, 1927. Mr. Albe is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Indiana State Underwriters' Association, Elks, Masons, American Legion, Sons of Veterans, and the Kiwanis Club, of which he is serving as vice president. Mrs. Albe attended the University of Valparaiso and takes an active part in the social affairs of the community.
