Historical Images of Porter County
Pennsylvania Railroad Crossing Tower
Valparaiso, Indiana
Date: 1911
Source Type: Postcard
Publisher, Printer, Photographer: Edie L.
Steele
Postmark: July 3, 1911, Valparaiso, Indiana
Collection: Steven R. Shook
Remark: The photographer that took this photograph was facing southeast.
The roadbed to the left of the tracks is Greenwich Street. Greenwich crosses the
track and connects with what was then known as Brick Street. That part of Brick
Street to the left of the intersection paralleled the Pennsylvania Railroad
tracks heading southeast and no longer exists. That part of Brick Street to the
right of the intersection is known today as Don Hovey Drive.
The second set of railroad tracks visible in the distance was, at the time this
photograph was taken, the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad (Nickel Plate
Road).
Sagers Lake appears at the far upper right of this photograph.
The following message by Edie L. Steele, a student attending Valparaiso
University, was written to Miss Rena Cable of Alliance, Ohio:
Valparaiso, Indiana.
July 2 - 1911.
Kind Friend:
I suppose you are busy now. I am taking Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and
Trigonometry. I have lots to do. We have about 4000 students here. I took this
picture about 100 ft. from my room. The Penn. R.R. you see is quite close. The
trains make a great deal of noise.
