Remark: This railroad derailment took place on the Grand Trunk Railway
track immediately west of the Washington Street crossing in Valparaiso on May
30, 1918. A switch left open inadvertantly caused the eastbound No. 4 Express
train's engine, tender, and two cars to derail. No one was injured in this
derailment. The switch was believed to have been left open by a freight crew.
