Remark: Valparaiso Chautauqua, First Annual Session, Aug. 31 to Sept. 9
inclusive. Valparaiso, Indiana. The first Chautauqua to take place in Valparaiso
occurred in 1906 at Sager's Lake. The general purpose of a Chautauqua was to
bring entertainment and culture for an entire community, both urban and rural,
with noted speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers, and preachers. Attendees
at Valparaiso's first Chautauqua were treated to talks by evangelist Billy
Sunday, U.S. Congressman E. D. Crumpacker, and noted lecturer Stanley L. Krebs,
of Chicago, who gave a talk on The Marvels and Mystery of the Mind. The
Salisbury Band, a nationally known band composed of natives of Valparaiso,
provided musical entertainment at the event.
