Remark: Located on the northwest corner of Franklin Street and Chicago
Street, the First Christian Church was constructed in 1888. J. H. O. Smith's
association with the First Christian Church in Valparaiso was atypical. While
serving as the State Evangelist for the faith, he came to Valparaiso in 1887 for
a 13-week meeting to assist in growing the local congregation. He was successful
in his work, as the local congregation grew from 82 members to 286. Members of
the Valparaiso church requested that Smith serve them. He agreed and led the
congregation from 1888 to 1893 and again from 1901 to 1906.
