Normal Book Store, College Hill
Valparaiso, Indiana
Date: Circa 1903
Source Type: Souvenir Book
Publisher, Printer, Photographer: Hobart &
Kennedy
Postmark: Not Applicable
Collection: Steven R. Shook
Remark: Note that between 1900 and 1906,
today's Valparaiso University was known as Valparaiso College. Benjamin F.
Perrine owned and operated the university book store, conducting a printing
business and at one time a bicycle manufacturing plant in connection. In 1892 he
sold the book store to M. E. Bogarte and removed a year later to his present
home in Wheeler.
The M. E. Bogarte Book Company was organized in 1904. Martin E. Bogarte operated
a penmanship school at the Northern Indiana Normal School and Business
Institute, the predecessor of Valparaiso University. He was a professor at the
school for several decades.
If present day Short Street were extended south and College Avenue extended
east, then this building would have been located on the northeast corner where
these two roads once intersected one another.
