Coburn Players:
Coburn Players.
The summer does not seem to be a propitious time for Shakespeare and other
classical dramas, yet the Coburn Players under the auspices of Columbia
University gave us a week of the classics. Of course the open air setting
mitigated the ordeal to a certain extent. Mr. Coburn has gathered about him a
group of players of no mean ability. The lines were read intelligently and with
feeling. The list of players presented included "The Canterburry Pilgrims." "The
Merchant of Venice," "Sancturary," a Bird Masque by Percy Mac Kaye, "Hamlet,"
"As You Like It" and "The Merry Wives of Windsor." Of these "Sanctuary" and "As
You Like It" were the best, possible because of the natural wood-like setting of
the Columbia campus.
The Coburn players started their season in Washington, D. C., on April 22, and
when they close in the latter part of August, their itinerary will have taken
them to more than fifty educational institutions throughout the country.
