Remark: The structure shown in this image is the second Vineyard Hall,
the first having been nearly destroyed by a fire.
Vineyard Hall was one of the largest dormitories at Valparaiso University. Shortly before midnight
on January 22, 1897, a fire was discovered in the building and before the fire
department could reach the scene the flames were beyond control. Approximately
sixty students were occupying the building and several of them had narrow
escapes. A Miss Minier and a Miss Warner were reportedly found insensible in their rooms and were
rescued with difficulty. Most of the boarders suffered some loss of personal
property. The
building belonged to a Mrs. Anderson, of Laporte, and was valued at $10,000. It
was almost a total loss, but was rebuilt.
