The following obituary for John Czizek was published in The Chesterton
Tribune in 1898:
PORTER POINTERS
John Czizek, one of Porter's well known and highly respected citizens, departed
life on Sunday, Sept. 4, 1898. For some years he has been ailing, but was always
able to attend to his work. His death was very sudden, and unexpected. Mr.
Czizek was born in Germany June 8, 1835, and emigrated to America in 1854. He
located in Porter in 1858, and in 1859 he married Margaret Smith. At the
breaking out of the war he enlisted in Company E., of the 128th Indiana
Volunteers, and served 3 years and 2 months. This service broke down his health,
and from that time he was subject to rheumatism and stomach trouble. He spent a
year and a half in Dubuque, Iowa, and with the exceptions of this time was a
citizen of Porter for the last 40 years. He leaves a wife and six children, all
of whom are grown. They are Mrs. Wannagar, Mrs. Freeze, Mrs. Vincent, Mrs.
Michaels, and Nick and Frank Czizek. The funeral was held Wednesday at 9:30 A.
M., the services being conducted at the Chesterton Catholic Church. The funeral
was one of the largest held in the townships for years.
The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of many friends. Among those
from abroad, who attended the funeral were Mrs. Herges, of Bellview Iowa, Mrs.
May, of Springfield, Ills., Mrs. Freeze and Michaels, Chicago Heights, and Mrs.
Vincent, Hobart.
