Bayles School
Pine Township, Porter County, Indiana

Date: Circa 1949
Source Type: Photograph
Publisher, Printer, Photographer: The Vidette-Messenger
Postmark: Not applicable
Collection: Steven R. Shook
Remark: The Bayles School was located northwest of the present day intersection of County Roads 1550 North and 425 East. Bayles School was a district school in the Pine Township. The school appears on Hardesty’s 1876 plat map of Pine Township, but not on Lee and Lee’s 1895 plat map. A newspaper article published in 1949 indicates that the school was constructed during the summer of 1897, which suggests a second schoolhouse was built on the site. The school was named in honor of local landowner John H. Bayles, a veteran of the Civil War. The school was still in operation as late as 1938.
