Woodville Junction and Substation, Gary Railways
Liberty Township, Porter County, Indiana
Date: Circa 1938
Source Type: Photograph
Publisher, Printer, Photographer: John F.
Humiston
Postmark: Not applicable
Collection: Steven R. Shook
Remark: After the Goodrum Junction power station
was destroyed by lightning in 1925, the Woodville Substation, the brick
structure to the right in this image, was constructed as
its replacement in 1926 to serve the Gary & Valparaiso Railway and the Gary
Railway. The Woodville Substation was a 500 kilowatt, 600 volt full-automatic
American Brown Boveri arc rectifier with a primary supply of 33,000 volts at
three-phase and 60 cycles. With the failure of the interurban service, this
structure was later converted to a private residence.
