Remark: August Hofferth, an immigrant from
Germany trained in plastering and brickmasonry, built a cement plant in Kouts in
1906. He manufactured concrete drainage tile, blocks, and burial vaults. Both of
August's sons, Burt and Emil, were employed at the business and later took
ownership. Due to declining demand, the production of blocks was discontinued in
1946. In 1958, the brothers sold the business to John Rogowski. Rogowski owned
and operated Kouts Building and Supply located one block east of the cement
company. The building housing the cement plant was bought and remodeled by Ralph
Birky and Monroe Helmuth for their custom cabinet business, Kouts Cabinets.
