Remark: JOHN WERICH -- Born in 1830. The oldest pioneer hunter living,
now in his 90th year. Began hunting on the Kankakee in 1852. A few months before
this book went to press he shot and killed a tiger cat [cougar] that measured
forty inches long and stood seventeen inches high, the first one ever seen in
the Kankakee swamps, supposed to have escaped from some menagerie.
John Werich was bon June 14, 1830, in Germany. He married Mary Dye. Werich died
in Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana, on November 5, 1924, at the age of 94 and
was interred in Hebron Cemetery in Hebron, Porter County, Indiana.
