Remark: A hunt club, constructed in 1879 by hunters from the
Indiana communities of Rockville, Terre Haute, and Indianapolis, was situated
northwest of Baum’s Bridge along the north shoreline of the original channel of
the Kankakee River. The area where the club was located was once commonly known
as Prairie Bend in reference to a significant bend in the original channel of
the Kankakee River. Benjamin Harrison would frequent this club prior to becoming
president of the United States. Adjacent to this club was the White House
Hunting Club to the northwest and the Louisville Hunt Club to the southeast. The
club would later be renamed Donley’s Resort and the clubhouse was converted into
a hotel.
