driving in the ceremonial first spike on the Valparaiso & Northern Railway line
in Chesterton on September 20, 1909; the Chesterton constable is seen behind
her. This photograph, looking north, was taken on Valparaiso Street, now known
as South Calumet Road, just south of Broadway Avenue.
Incorporated in August 1908, the Valparaiso & Northern Railway construction was
financed by citizens of Valparaiso and outside investors; the railway was to
become one of the feeder lines the the Chicago-New York Electric Air Line
Railroad.
