Remark: Postmarked from Boone Grove, Indiana, written in ink on the
reverse of this postcard is "Indiana pipe line co." In 1908, the Indiana Pipe
Line Company, a company wholly owned by the Standard Oil Company, installed an
eight-inch diameter oil pipeline through the southern section of Porter County,
Indiana. The pipeline terminated at Whiting in Lake County, Indiana, where it
was refined into various oil-based products. The pipeline closely followed the
north edge of the Chicago & Erie Railroad right-of-way through Porter County.
Four separate workmen gangs were employed to dig and install the pipeline along
its total 150 mile route. In 1911, the Indiana Pipe Line Company was separated
from Standard Oil Company to operate as an independent common carrier. In 1943,
Indiana Pipe Line Company would merge with other pipeline companies to form
Buckeye Pipeline Company, known today as Buckeye Partners (Buckeye Energy
Holdings, LLC).
