Remark:
Joseph Bailly (Honore Gratien
Joseph Bailly de Messein) arrived in Porter County in 1822 with his family and
household goods. At that time, the area was largely inhabited with Pottawatomie
Indians. When locating his home along the banks of the Little Calumet River and
the intersection of the Tolleston Beach Trail and the north branch of the Sauk
Trail, Bailly thought he was locating in Michigan territory, where he had lived
for many years prior in the Mackinac area.
