Remark: The Clifford family of Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana, was instrumental in establishing railroads in northern Indiana, northern Illinois, and southern Michigan beginning in 1854. Their business concentrated on contract work to establish railroad grades. This postcard demonstrates the type of machinery used by the company to cut a grade for a rail line.
