Historical Images of Porter County

Bird's-eye view of Valparaiso, Ind.
Valparaiso, Indiana

Date: Circa 1910
Source Type: Postcard
Publisher, Printer, Photographer: Unknown
Postmark: None
Collection: Steven R. Shook
Remark: The angled, open-frame wooden structure that is visible in the foreground was a recreation chute located on the south side of Sager's Lake. People would get into a boat at the top of the chute and then the boat would slide down the chute at a high rate of speed into the lake. The ride was commonly referred to as the "Chute-the-Chute." The steeple seen in the horizon at the exrteme left of this image is St. Paul's Catholic Church, while the large tower on the horizon under the Valparaiso, Ind. print is the Porter County court house. The two towers at the extreme right were part of the Old College Building at Valparaiso University.
